  Profitable dentistry during the downturn
Dr Howard Stean discusses opportunities to succeed and prosper in dentistry

These are challenging times for dentists, who are telling me they have a shortfall of private patients and income.

I am convinced that there are also now opportunities to succeed and prosper, but the answer is definitely not just simple costcutting.

My experience over many years has reinforced the adage 'To get on...get educated' and this is more important now than ever.

Over the last years I have been proud to see students of mine aspire to Dentist of the Year, Dentist to 10 years younger, and many successful dentists with high profile practices.

What they all share is an eagerness to learn new skills and apply them practically.

Patients generally prefer to have the confidence in their dentist to have the ability to deal with as many of their needs as possible, and this means the successful dentist has to learn an ever wider range of treatments.

My courses offer an unrivalled opportunity to learn from A for Air-abrasion to Z for Zekrya (in case you want to know it's a natty instrument to protect the gingival margins whilst preparing margins for veneers and crowns).

Online learning may be useful for CPD points, and information that we need, but nothing is better than the 'real life' experience of a structured Course. Over a five-month period delegates attend one Wednesday each month, and have the opportunity to bring into their daily work newer techniques on a step by step basis. There are practical hands on sessions, and assisted study.

I encourage all dentists, both newly qualified and experienced, to consider an Aesthetic Restorative Course here at Kew. Fees are very affordable and times carefully planned to make a visit possible from most parts of the UK.
